Neck Pain Q & A

What causes neck pain?

One of the most common causes of neck pain is poor posture. The American lifestyle is more sedentary than ever, with people spending hours every day staring at screens, such as computers at work and tablets and cell phones everywhere else. If your screens aren’t positioned correctly, you can strain your neck by holding your head in an abnormal position to see it.

Other common causes of neck pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Nerve compression
  • Whiplash and other traumatic injuries
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Meningitis
  • Thyroid disorder
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia

While neck pain is common, Dr. Gohel can treat it with an accurate diagnosis and customized treatment plans.

When should I talk to a doctor about my neck pain?

You should call Dr. Gohel if you have neck pain that persists for more than a few days and doesn’t ease with rest, ice, heat, or over-the-counter medication. You should also make an appointment if you can’t turn your head or if you have any noticeable deformities or swelling in your neck.

Dr. Gohel can also help if your neck pain is accompanied by a headache or numbness or weakness in your shoulders or arms.

How is neck pain treated?

Dr. Gohel begins your treatment with a comprehensive exam. She asks about your symptoms and your overall health and lifestyle. She feels your neck for signs of swelling or other abnormalities and guides you through a series of movements to gauge your pain and how it affects your range of motion.

Once Dr. Gohel diagnoses your pain and understands how it’s interfering with your life, she creates a customized treatment plan to relieve your pain. While each pain management program is custom designed for each patient, Dr. Gohel often combines therapies for optimal pain relief. For example, your plan may include:

  • Medication
  • Immobilization
  • Physical therapy
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Steroid injections
  • Nerve blocks
  • Radiofrequency ablation

In some cases, you may need surgery to repair or restore your neck. If you need surgery, Dr. Gohel can provide pain relief treatments to help you recover comfortably.
